An old favourite of mine

One of my favourites, the Rolling Stones Song – Paint It Black. Also sung by Ciara and Lee Meed, Ciara particularly doing a fine version. But don’t just think this is a very dark and depressing song, maybe portraying a depressed soul. If you scroll down to the lower section – Further dissemination of the lyrics – you’ll find a really good interpretation of the songs meaning.

Paint It Black1 (originally released as “Paint It, Black”) is a song by the English rock band the Rolling Stones. Jointly credited to the songwriting partnership of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, it was first released as a single on 6 May 1966, and later included as the opening track to the US version of their 1966 album Aftermath.

Lyrics

Songwriters: Keith Richards / Mick Jagger. Paint It Black lyrics © Abkco Music, Inc.

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colours anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

I see a line of cars and they’re all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens every day

I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door I must have it painted black
Maybe then I’ll fade away and not have to face the facts
It’s not easy facing up, when your whole world is black

No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the setting sun
My love will laugh with me before the morning comes

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colours anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

Hmm, hmm, hmm
Hmm, hmm, hmm
Hmm, hmm, hmm
Hmm, hmm, hmm (verse X4)

I want to see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I want to see the sun, blotted out from the sky
I want to see it painted, painted, painted, painted black
Yeah

Hmm, hmm, hmm
Hmm, hmm, hmm
Hmm, hmm, hmm
Hmm, hmm, hmm (verse X4)

Further Dissemination of the Lyrics

This info was taken from a post written by Karnenyen2 on February 26, 2013.

The lyric is about the death of his girlfriend and attending the subsequent funeral after.

The red door refers to his heart, which he now wants painted black, as to never be opened again. The man is grieving here after all.

And the funeral: “…line of cars painted black, with flowers and my love, both never to come back”. How much Poe do you need?

Furthermore: “.. I could not for-see this thing happening to you”.. the protagonist blaming himself for not being able to help or stop the death from happening.

Painting it black is a metaphor for his mood and how he does not wish to be consoled, merely left alone to “fade away and not have to face the facts”.

As far as the girls walking by in their summer clothes, they simply remind him of his loss and must, therefore, turn away, “…until my darkness goes”.

Again this man is crushed, he wants everything to be black to reflect his malaise.

Regards, Mike.
